A less common injury resulting from another's negligence is burns. Burns are not as frequent as car accidents, but often result in severe pain and substantial economic loss and also extreme medical expenses associated with the treatment.

Burns are categorized by the type of burn and by the cause of the burn. The tree primarily causes of burns are thermal burns, chemical burns and electrical burns. Thermal burns are what we are most familiar with. Thermal burns are generally caused by external heat usually from flames, hot object objects such as metal or stones or charcoal briquets. Other common thermal burns are caused by steam and hot liquids. These burns are caused by the heat source which raises the temperature of the skin and then causes the skin and underlying tissue to die. Chemical burns are caused by chemicals described as caustic chemicals. These chemicals include alkalies, acids, detergents and solvents that come into contact with the skin or the eyes. Electrical burns are less common and are caused when by electric current passes through the body.

Burns are also classified according to the severity of the burn. The most severe burns are categorized as third degree burns. These burns destroy the first and second layers of skin and may every cause damage to the muscles, the tendons and the bones. Sometimes there is no pain following the burn, because the nerve endings are severely damaged or destroyed. A second degree burn is moderate and should be treated by a medical professional. These burns involve damage to the first and second layer of the skin and are red and painful and show blistering. A first degree burn is a mild burn and there is no blistering or other sign of a severe burn. A typical sunburn is a first degree burn. These are considered superficial burns and are often treated at home, but sometimes should be treated by a medical profession if it involves the entire body.

The severity of a burn is also determined by the amount of skin burned. The categories uses are less than 10% of the total body surface for an adult, 10-20% of the total body surface of an adult, and more than 20% of the total body surface of an adult. For the elderly and children the categories differ and are less than 5% of the total body surface, 5-10% of the total body surface and more than 10% of the total body surface.

Serious burns are treated through a procedure called debridement where the dead tissue is removed and if it cannot heal itself a piece of skin from an unburned area of the body is transplanted to the injured area, this is called grafting.
